How Is a New CCBI Programme Preparing Catholic Education Leaders for Changing Times?
Twenty-eight Catholic clergy and religious leaders attend six-day CCBI refresher in Goa, focusing on skills, spiritual renewal, leadership, student challenges and future Catholic education for today.
Twenty-eight clergy and religious serving as principals and heads of Catholic educational institutions have gathered in Benaulim, Goa, for a six-day programme focused on strengthening leadership and professional competencies in Catholic education. Organised by the CCBI Commission for Vocations, Seminaries, Clergy and Religious (VSCR), the Refresher Programme is being held from September 21 to 26 at Shanti Sadan. Its theme is “Enhancing the Professional Competency of the Principals and Heads of Higher Educational Institutions.” The programme combines professional development with spiritual renewal, personal reflection and experience-sharing. It aims to help Catholic education leaders respond to changing educational realities while remaining connected to the mission of their institutions. The programme began on September 22 with Morning Prayer and Holy Eucharist presided over by Bishop Simão Fernandes, Auxiliary Bishop of Goa and Daman. In his homily, Bishop Simão reflected on the importance of transmitting faith through personal witness. He encouraged educational leaders to communicate the mercy and compassion of Jesus to young people through relationships, accompaniment and daily example. He emphasised that authentically lived faith can often communicate more effectively than intellectual knowledge alone. During the inaugural session, Fr. Alexio Meneses highlighted the importance of combining professional competence with commitment to Catholic educational institutions. Fr. Charles Leon, Executive Secretary of the VSCR Commission, explained the programme's objectives and methodology, stressing continuous learning, self-renewal and openness to emerging realities. Fr. Joye James SJ facilitated an introductory session where participants shared their experiences and expectations. He also conducted a session on “Self-Awareness and Self-Esteem towards a Positive Self,” encouraging participants to reflect on their strengths, limitations, attitudes and patterns of interaction and how these influence their leadership. Another session led by Fr. Charles Leon examined “Challenges Emerging from the Student Community: An Adolescent Perspective.” The discussion addressed issues affecting young people, including identity, relationships, technology and changing social expectations. Participants were encouraged to listen carefully to adolescents and create educational environments that provide sensitive guidance and accompaniment. Sr. Thumma Margret Julie SSAM led a session titled “Reimagining Educational Excellence: From Yesterday’s Legacy to Tomorrow’s Future.” The session encouraged participants to preserve the heritage of Catholic education while adapting educational practices to contemporary needs. Alongside professional sessions, the programme includes prayer, reflection and community recreation, giving participants opportunities for spiritual and personal renewal as well as fraternity. The organisers hope the refresher programme will help Catholic education leaders develop greater self-awareness, compassion and professional competence while strengthening their contribution to the continuing mission of Catholic education.
