Dindigul Diocese Trains Catechism Teachers in Innovative Faith Formation
Dindigul Diocese and Jesuit Madurai Province trained catechism teachers on Sept. 17, 2026. Sessions covered faith formation, child-centred teaching and helping children grow in Christ.
The Diocese of Dindigul, in collaboration with the Jesuit Madurai Province, organized a special training programme for catechism teachers at St. Mary’s Higher Secondary School campus to strengthen their ministry of faith formation among children. The programme was organized by the Punitha Thoma Pastoral Centre and brought together catechism teachers for sessions focusing on faith formation, teaching methods and pastoral challenges. Fr. A. Soosai Arockiadoss, Coordinator of the Diocesan Pastoral Commissions and Director of the Pastoral Centre, welcomed the participants and highlighted the important role of catechists in nurturing children's faith and spiritual growth. The first session, titled “Catechism and the Faith Life of Our Children,” was led by Fr. John Richard, SJ, Vice Novice Director of Beschi Illam, Dindigul. He encouraged catechists to accompany children throughout their faith journey and help them develop a personal and living relationship with Jesus Christ. The second session, “The Importance of Catechism and Innovative Methods in Teaching,” was conducted by Fr. Arul Gnanapragasam, SJ, Director of St. Mary’s Career Academy, Dindigul. He emphasized the importance of creative, child-centred and engaging approaches to catechesis. He also introduced initiatives such as the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network, Soldiers of God and programmes focusing on the lives of the saints as possible approaches to strengthening children's faith formation. Bishop Emeritus Thomas Paulsamy encouraged the catechists to see their ministry not simply as a responsibility but as a vocation and mission entrusted to them by God. Fr. Sahayaraj, the contact person, also addressed the gathering. The programme included group discussions, experience-sharing and an evaluation session facilitated by Fr. Soosai Arockiadoss. These activities allowed catechists to reflect on their pastoral experiences and challenges. During the discussions, participants proposed conducting similar formation programmes at the vicariate level and requested additional teaching materials and catechetical resources to support their ministry. The programme concluded by emphasizing the role of catechists as educators in faith, witnesses to the Gospel and guides who help children encounter Christ and grow in Christian commitment. The organizers expressed their gratitude to Bishop Antonysamy Savarimuthu, Apostolic Administrator of Dindigul, as well as other diocesan officials for their support and encouragement.
