What Made Padre Pio’s Life of Prayer and Service So Extraordinary?

Saint Padre Pio, the beloved Capuchin Franciscan priest and mystic, devoted his life to prayer, the Eucharist, Confession and caring for the suffering. His witness still inspires Catholics worldwide.

What Made Padre Pio’s Life of Prayer and Service So Extraordinary?

Hundreds of children from schools and parishes across Rome are preparing to gather with Pope Leo XIV in the Vatican Gardens on October 1 for the launch of the annual “One Million Children Praying the Rosary” initiative, promoted by Aid to the Church in Need (ACN). Between 700 and 1,000 children are expected to gather at the Lourdes Grotto in the Vatican Gardens at 5 p.m. They will pray the Rosary alongside the Pope in spiritual communion with children, families, schools and Christian communities around the world. This year, the initiative is taking on a new format. Instead of being centred on a single day, the prayer campaign will run from October 1 to October 7, allowing communities to choose a day during the week to participate. The worldwide initiative will conclude on October 7, the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. ACN is encouraging children, families, schools, parishes and Christian communities to unite in prayer for peace and unity, particularly amid continuing violence, persecution, poverty and instability in different parts of the world. The Vatican gathering will form part of a wider international prayer network. Several parishes and schools in Sudan are expected to participate, while children from the Tsimané indigenous community in the Bolivian Amazon have been praying the Rosary in both Tsimané and Spanish. Children at St. Christopher’s Parish in Zimbabwe are scheduled to pray on October 4, while a parish in Paraguay will have its Rosary prayer broadcast through Radio Pa’i Puku. The campaign is also inspired by the message traditionally associated with the apparitions at Fatima: “In the end, my Immaculate Heart will triumph.” Cardinal Kurt Koch has presented Mary’s Immaculate Heart as an example of openness to the Holy Spirit and as a model of faith, prayer and love. The initiative began in Venezuela in 2005 and has since grown into an international prayer movement involving children, families, schools, parishes and Church communities. It is also associated with words attributed to Padre Pio about the spiritual significance of one million children praying the Rosary. Participation is not limited to children. Parents, teachers, priests, religious, catechists and families are also invited to take part. Those who cannot pray the complete Rosary can participate by praying a single decade. Through these gatherings, the initiative seeks to connect children and Christian communities across different countries and cultures in a shared prayer for peace and unity.
