What Happened When Christian Prayer Gatherings Were Attacked in West Bengal?

Two separate incidents involving Christian prayer gatherings were reported in West Bengal on September 6, raising concerns among Christian organisations about the safety of worship services and religious gatherings in the state. According to UCA News, the incidents occurred in West Medinipur and East Medinipur districts. In one case, a group reportedly entered a Christian home in Nandapurya village, where Pastor Sukhendu Singh was leading a prayer service attended by Christians from nearby villages. A Christian eyewitness, Purna Hembram, told UCA News that the group threatened the pastor and forcibly took him away. Other reports said that he was later released after being allegedly assaulted and pressured to sign a statement concerning future prayer services. These allegations were reported by Christian sources and remain claims about the incident. The second incident reportedly took place at a Presbyterian house church in Rangilabasan village in East Medinipur. A group allegedly entered the premises and vandalised the building. Reports said that most members of the congregation had already left after the morning service when the incident occurred. Christian organisations have expressed concern that such incidents could discourage Christians from holding prayer meetings and other religious gatherings. Reports of other disruptions to Christian worship have also emerged from parts of West Bengal in recent months. The incidents have also taken place amid allegations by some groups that Christian prayer meetings are connected with forced religious conversions. Government officials have stated that religious practice is a personal choice while also saying that allegations of forced conversion should be addressed through the law. The reports have renewed discussion about religious freedom, the protection of worship gatherings and the safety of Christian communities in West Bengal. Christian representatives have called for peaceful worship and protection of constitutional religious rights. The reported incidents remain matters requiring investigation by the appropriate authorities. Claims made by witnesses, Christian organisations and other groups should be distinguished from independently established facts as investigations continue.
