From Village Sand to Asian Games Silver: How Indian Long Jumper Ancy Sojan Broke a 22-Year National

“GOD IS HELPING ME”: ANCY SOJAN’S LEAP OF FAITH FROM NATTIKA TO THE ASIAN GAMES PODIUM For 25-year-old Indian long jumper Ancy Sojan Edappilly, the runway is more than just a athletic arena—it is a story of faith, family sacrifice, and relentless perseverance. Her journey has taken her from training on the sandy coastal shores of Nattika in Thrissur, Kerala, to the international podium at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. From Coastal Kerala to the Indian Navy Ancy grew up in a modest Christian family in Nattika. Her father, Sojan ET, an autorickshaw driver and former district-level athlete, recognized his daughter's talent early on and encouraged her to pursue the athletic dreams he was never able to realize. Lacking sophisticated training facilities in her early years, Ancy trained on village sandpits—a humble beginning that forged the grit defining her career today. Her dedication eventually led her to represent the Indian Navy through the sports quota, where she currently serves as a Chief Petty Officer, balancing military responsibilities with elite athletic training. Shattering a 22-Year-Old National Record In June 2026, Ancy etched her name into Indian sports history at the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar. On her fifth attempt, she produced a soaring 6.88-metre jump, breaking the iconic national record of 6.83 metres set by legendary athlete Anju Bobby George at the 2004 Athens Olympics. Anju Bobby George warmly welcomed the breakthrough, calling it a historic moment for Indian athletics. Reflecting on her record-breaking leap, Ancy shared: "I want to keep improving and be consistent, become a world-class jumper and I will do everything to become one. The difficulties and obstacles make me stronger. And God is helping me." Drama and Silver at the Asian Games Carrying the momentum of her national record, Ancy entered the women’s long jump final at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya. She held the gold-medal position with a best jump of 6.53 metres until China’s Huang Yingying produced a 6.55-metre leap in the final round—edging Ancy out of gold by just two centimetres. Though narrowly missing gold, the silver medal marked Ancy's second consecutive Asian Games medal (following her silver at the Hangzhou Games), making her only the second Indian woman after Anju Bobby George to win two Asian Games long jump medals. "I’m a little heartbroken for the two centimetres I missed. Until the last moment, I was in the gold medal position. So, I kept praying to God," Ancy reflected after the event. "I am glad. This is only my second Asian Games campaign, and my second medal." Faith and Perseverance on the World Stage Ancy’s open acknowledgment of her Christian faith has become a defining aspect of her story. She demonstrates that faith and rigorous physical discipline walk hand in hand. From her father’s sacrifices to her reliance on prayer during intense competition, Ancy Sojan's career stands as an inspiring reminder that extraordinary accomplishments can emerge from the most humble beginnings.
