Christian Humility Means More Than Simply Thinking Less of Yourself
A Common C.S. Lewis Misquote Misses the True Meaning of Christian Humility
Christian humility is an important biblical virtue, but a popular saying often associated with C. S. Lewis may give an incomplete picture of what humility actually means. The commonly repeated phrase says that humility is not about thinking less of yourself, but about thinking of yourself less. Although the statement has become widely used in Christian discussions, the article points out that the saying is often misattributed to Lewis and can also oversimplify the biblical understanding of humility. Scripture repeatedly calls believers to humility and warns against pride. From a Christian perspective, humility is not simply about having a negative view of yourself or deliberately ignoring your own needs and abilities. Instead, it involves seeing yourself honestly before God and recognising that your life should not revolve entirely around yourself. The article explains that Lewis's actual writings present a deeper idea. Rather than constantly examining whether someone is being humble, a genuinely humble person becomes less preoccupied with their own importance. This does not mean that Christians should stop reflecting on their character or avoid confronting personal weaknesses. True humility also requires honest self-examination. Christians are called to recognise pride, acknowledge their limitations and allow God to shape their attitudes and actions. Humility therefore involves both an accurate understanding of oneself and a willingness to put others before personal status or recognition. The example of Jesus provides the central model. Christian humility is connected to Christ's willingness to serve, love and place the good of others above His own interests. It is therefore more than simply reducing self-focus; it is an active way of living that reflects Christ's character. The article ultimately argues that Christians should not reduce humility to a memorable quotation. Biblical humility calls believers to examine their hearts, resist pride, understand their proper relationship with God and demonstrate Christlike love toward others.
