John Paul II’s Legacy Inspires a New Generation

The John Paul II Vatican Foundation is preparing to mark its 45th anniversary in Rome from October 19-22, bringing together members of its international community and concluding with a private audience with Pope Leo XIV. The anniversary will focus not simply on remembering St. John Paul II, but on continuing the mission he began through practical initiatives that make a lasting difference in people’s lives. A major part of this work is supporting young people through scholarships, education, faith formation and cultural programs. Founded by St. John Paul II in 1981, the foundation was created to promote initiatives centered on the dignity of the human person, particularly young people, students and pilgrims, while also supporting art and culture. One of its key programs provides scholarships at the Catholic University of Lublin in Poland, where Karol Wojtyla taught ethics for many years before becoming pope. The program offers students accommodation, meals, formation and academic support. According to the foundation, more than 1,100 students and over 40 doctoral graduates have benefited from the program, which receives more than 500,000 euros annually. For many beneficiaries, the foundation has become more than an educational support program. It has created an international community where students experience friendship, faith and personal growth. Former scholar Gloria Nwagana said the experience helped her develop independence, openness and a stronger sense of responsibility toward young people. Foundation chairman Msgr. Pawel Ptasznik said its mission is to pass John Paul II’s values to future generations through concrete action rather than nostalgia. The foundation therefore continues to support scholarships, formation programs, cultural initiatives and new ways of sharing the Christian faith. The foundation also presents the Premio San Giovanni Paolo II Vatican Award, recognizing individuals and institutions that put values associated with St. John Paul II into practice. As it enters its 45th year, the foundation is emphasizing that its purpose is not simply to preserve the memory of a pope, but to continue the works he began. Through education, faith and service to young people, it seeks to carry his vision into a new generation.
