Shine Your Light Campaign Aims to Reach Millions of Lonely People This Christmas
The Shine Your Light campaign aims to mobilise 5,000 UK churches this Christmas to reach people facing loneliness, especially older and younger generations, through evangelism and community outreach.
The Shine Your Light campaign is preparing for a major Christmas outreach across the United Kingdom, with organisers aiming to connect with millions of people who may experience loneliness during the festive season. The campaign, which has been running for three years, is placing particular emphasis this year on people who feel isolated or forgotten, especially among older and younger generations. Last year, organisers initially aimed to mobilise 200,000 Christians and reach two million people. According to the campaign, more than 300,000 Christians from around 3,500 churches eventually took part in more than 1,800 events, reaching over 3.5 million people. The campaign also received public support from King Charles III and then-Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer. For this year's campaign, organisers hope to involve around 5,000 churches and encourage them to take the Christmas message into their local communities. The campaign highlights loneliness as an issue affecting different generations. Research cited by the organisers indicates that some older people frequently experience loneliness, while government data also points to significant levels of loneliness among young adults, particularly young men. Dr Jonathan Oloyede, founder and CEO of the National Day of Prayer and Worship and a key organiser of Shine Your Light, said Christmas can intensify feelings of isolation for people dealing with bereavement, health difficulties, limited family contact or a lack of social connection. The campaign is encouraging churches to identify people in their communities who may feel forgotten and build relationships with them. Organisers say the goal is not only to provide support during Christmas but also to develop lasting connections beyond the festive season. Shine Your Light is designed to encourage churches and Christians to take part in evangelistic and community activities. Organisers hope the initiative will bring messages of hope, joy and Christian faith to people who may not normally attend church. The campaign's wider emphasis is on practical engagement with local communities and encouraging churches to work together in reaching people who are experiencing loneliness.
