Caritas India Celebrates Six Decades of Transforming Lives, Restoring Dignity and Serving the Nation

A Legacy of Compassion and Solidarity In 1962, the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI) established Caritas India with a singular, profound mandate: to embody the Gospel principle of "Love in Action" (Caritas) by serving the poor, the vulnerable, and the suffering. Celebrating 64 years of compassionate service to the nation, Caritas India stands as a beacon of hope and a cornerstone of social transformation across the length and breadth of India. From its early days providing emergency food and medical assistance during national crises to its present-day role as an empowering agent of sustainable community development, Caritas India has touched millions of lives, upholding the sacredness and dignity of every human person. From Emergency Relief to Community Empowerment Caritas India's operations first scaled up on a major national level during the 1971 Bangladesh refugee crisis, providing life-saving humanitarian aid to millions fleeing conflict. Over the past six decades, the organisation has been on the front lines of every major emergency and natural disaster in India, including: Earthquakes: Uttarkashi (1991), Latur (1993), Gujarat (2001), and Jammu & Kashmir (2005) Cyclones & Tsunamis: Odisha Super Cyclone (1999), the Indian Ocean Tsunami (2004), and Cyclone Aila (2009) Floods & Local Emergencies: Bihar floods (2007, 2008 Kosi breach) and the Leh cloudburst (2010) Recognising that emergency assistance alone cannot eliminate poverty, Caritas India intentionally shifted its strategic focus from charity and welfare to empowering community animation. Today, it builds local community capacity, enabling marginalised groups to advocate for their rights, achieve food sovereignty, and secure sustainable livelihoods. Core Pillars of Strategic Impact Caritas India works across several key developmental and social justice domains: Humanitarian Aid & Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR): Equipping vulnerable communities with local disaster preparedness, early warning systems, and rapid emergency response capabilities. Climate-Adaptive Agriculture & Food Sovereignty: Promoting eco-friendly farming practices, sustainable natural resource management, and climate resilience among smallholder farmers and tribal communities. Inclusive Livelihoods & Skill Development: Empowering women, youth, and rural families through self-help groups (SHGs), vocational training, and social entrepreneurship. Community Healthcare & Anti-Human Trafficking: Running community-based health interventions focused on nutrition, HIV/AIDS care, and preventive health, alongside robust cross-border initiatives to combat human trafficking and protect vulnerable migrants and children. Disability Inclusion & Rights: Initiatives like the Chetana Campaign provide assistive technologies (such as motorised wheelchairs) and advocate for the independence, dignity, and equal opportunities of persons with disabilities. Grassroots Network and Leadership Caritas India operates as an umbrella organisation facilitating a vast network across the country, comprising: 165 Diocesan Social Service Societies (DSSS) 14 Regional Fora under regional Bishops' conferences Over 250,000 Community-Based Organisations (CBOs), self-help groups, and local volunteer teams Guided by the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI) with Archbishop Dr. Linus Neli serving as Chairman, Fr. Jesudass R. as Executive Director, and Fr. Benny Edayath as Assistant Executive Director—Caritas India maintains high standards of ethical leadership, financial transparency, and grassroots engagement. Looking Ahead: A Renewed Commitment to Serve As Caritas India celebrates its 64-year milestone, its leadership, staff, volunteers, and partners look forward with renewed dedication. In an era marked by climate change, socio-economic disparities, and emerging global challenges, Caritas India reaffirms its mission: to restore human dignity, foster social justice, and put Love into Action for generations to come.
