Most Practising Christians in the UK Are Evangelical, Study Finds

A new study by the Evangelical Alliance UK has provided an overview of the size, beliefs and demographic profile of evangelical Christians in the United Kingdom. According to the 28-page report, around 12.3 million people in the UK either identify as evangelical, hold evangelical beliefs, or both. The study found that evangelicals make up approximately 64% of practising Christians. The research defines practising Christians as those who attend church at least monthly and pray and read the Bible independently at least weekly. The report also found that 11.4% of the overall UK population, or about 8 million people, identify as evangelical. Around 14.1% of the population, equivalent to 9.9 million people, were found to hold evangelical beliefs. Young adults were among the groups most likely to identify as evangelical or hold evangelical beliefs. Among classic evangelicals, 43% were under the age of 35. The study also reported significant ethnic diversity, with about 30% of evangelicals coming from ethnic minority backgrounds. The research found a male majority among evangelical Christians. Around 61.6% of classic evangelicals and 59.8% of broad evangelicals were male. Pentecostals represented the largest denominational group among classic evangelicals, accounting for 29%. Anglicans represented 17% of classic evangelicals and 24% of broad evangelicals, while Roman Catholics accounted for 19% of broad evangelicals. The study was conducted by Whitestone Insight between February 25 and March 8, 2026, based on responses from 8,407 UK adults, including 3,804 people who identified as Christian. The Evangelical Alliance said the findings highlight the presence of evangelical Christianity among younger people, ethnic minority communities and men in the UK. The report was released to coincide with the 180th anniversary of the Evangelical Alliance, founded in 1846.
