What Moved Pope Leo XIV to Tears Before 80,000 Young Catholics?
Pope Leo XIV was moved during a youth prayer vigil in France, where hundreds portrayed saints and blesseds, inspiring thousands of young Catholics to embrace faith, holiness and Christian witness now.
Pope Leo XIV was visibly moved during a youth prayer vigil at the Stade de France in Paris on September 25, 2026, where around 80,000 young Catholics gathered for prayer, reflection and celebration of Christian faith. One of the most emotional moments came during a dramatic procession featuring hundreds of actors dressed as saints and historical Christian figures. The presentation represented France’s long Catholic heritage and its more than 1,700 saints and blesseds. The procession included figures such as St. Joan of Arc and St. Thérèse of Lisieux, alongside representations of early Christian martyrs and other witnesses of faith. Together, they created what the organisers presented as an “army of holiness,” symbolising generations of Christians who lived their faith through prayer, sacrifice, courage and service. The scene deeply touched Pope Leo XIV, who was seen wiping away a tear before speaking to the young people. He thanked them for their faith and encouraged them to recognise their own calling to live as witnesses of Christ. The evening also included music, prayer and artistic performances, creating an atmosphere that connected France’s Christian heritage with the faith of a younger generation. The Pope’s visit to Notre-Dame later added another significant moment to the evening, as he joined thousands of faithful in singing the Salve Regina in Latin beneath the cathedral’s historic vaults. The gathering served as both a celebration of France’s Christian past and an invitation to young Catholics to continue that tradition through their own lives. The lives of the saints were presented not simply as history, but as examples of faith that can inspire new generations.
