What Is Bishop Savio Fernandes Asking Christians to Do Amid Growing Hostility?

Auxiliary Bishop Dominic Savio Fernandes of Bombay has encouraged Christians facing hostility and allegations surrounding their charitable and pastoral activities to remain faithful to their mission while responding peacefully. Speaking about Christian service, Bishop Fernandes emphasised that helping people in need should not depend on their religious background. He said Christians should continue feeding the hungry, caring for the sick, supporting abandoned people and helping those living in poverty. The bishop also highlighted freedom of conscience in matters of faith. Referring to Article 25 of the Constitution of India, he stressed that people should be free to make religious choices according to their conscience, while rejecting force, fraud, coercion, deception or intimidation in matters of faith. Addressing allegations related to religious conversion, Bishop Fernandes said such claims should be handled through evidence, law and due process rather than intimidation or mob action. He encouraged Christians to respect the law while continuing their pastoral and charitable responsibilities. He also urged Christians not to allow suspicion or hostility to stop them from serving people in need. Referring to the experience of the apostles, he recalled the biblical declaration, “We must obey God rather than men,” while making clear that Christians should not respond to opposition with retaliation. Reflecting on reports of disrupted prayer meetings, attacks on churches and damaged crosses, Bishop Fernandes encouraged Christians to remain steadfast in their faith. He reminded them that acts of hostility should not diminish the meaning of prayer, the cross or Christian service. His message centred on faithfulness, peaceful witness, human dignity and continued service to those in need, even during difficult circumstances.
