CBCI JPD held a peacebuilding formation programme for 28 deacons in Poonamallee, Tamil Nadu, focusing on peace, justice, dialogue, reconciliation and social harmony in pastoral ministry and society.
The CBCI Office for Justice, Peace and Development (JPD) conducted a formation programme on peacebuilding for 28 deacons in Poonamallee, Tamil Nadu. The programme was designed to provide the deacons with formation and practical perspectives on peacebuilding, justice and social harmony. It aimed to help them understand their role in promoting reconciliation and constructive dialogue through their pastoral ministry. The formation programme addressed the importance of peace, justice, human dignity, dialogue and reconciliation in the life and mission of the Church. Participants were encouraged to look at contemporary social challenges and consider ways in which Christian communities can contribute to greater harmony and peaceful coexistence. The programme also highlighted the importance of engaging with people from different communities and creating spaces for dialogue. Such initiatives can help address social divisions, misunderstandings and tensions at the grassroots level. The CBCI Office for Justice, Peace and Development is one of the official offices of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India and works on issues connected with justice, peace and development. The formation of deacons in peacebuilding is intended to strengthen their capacity to incorporate these values into their pastoral responsibilities. Through their ministry, they can encourage communities to respond to social challenges through dialogue, respect, reconciliation and service. The programme forms part of the CBCI's broader efforts to promote peacebuilding and social harmony. Similar CBCI-related programmes have focused on developing grassroots peace initiatives, Social Harmony Groups and Peace Clubs, with particular attention to dialogue, justice, dignity and reconciliation. The formation programme in Poonamallee therefore provided the 28 deacons with an opportunity for learning and reflection while encouraging them to become promoters of peace and social harmony in their communities.
