Why Is the Church Welcoming Tamil Nadu’s Expanded Free Breakfast Scheme?
The Church welcomed Tamil Nadu’s free breakfast programme, saying it can improve children’s daily nutrition, education and well-being, especially for all students from vulnerable families.
The Catholic Church has welcomed Tamil Nadu’s expansion of its free breakfast programme for schoolchildren, describing the initiative as an important step toward supporting children’s nutrition and education. The state government has expanded the Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Free Breakfast Scheme to include students from Classes 6 to 8 in government and government-aided schools. The expansion is expected to benefit about 15.30 lakh additional children. With the latest expansion, the programme covers students from Classes 1 to 8 and reaches thousands of schools across Tamil Nadu. The government has allocated additional funding for the expansion, bringing the overall allocation for the scheme to ₹724 crore for the current financial year. The breakfast programme is intended to ensure that children do not attend school hungry and can concentrate better on their studies. It also seeks to improve children’s nutritional well-being and encourage regular school attendance. The Church’s appreciation of the initiative reflects its wider emphasis on caring for children and supporting families facing economic difficulties. Providing nutritious food at school can be particularly significant for children from vulnerable households, where food insecurity can affect both health and education. The initiative also highlights the connection between social welfare and education. By helping children begin their school day with a meal, the programme seeks to address one practical barrier to learning while promoting their overall well-being. The Church’s response presents the breakfast programme as an example of how public welfare initiatives can contribute to the dignity and development of children. It also echoes the Christian emphasis on caring for people in need and ensuring that children receive opportunities to grow, learn and live with dignity. As Tamil Nadu continues implementing the expanded programme, its impact on children’s nutrition, attendance and educational participation will remain an important area of public interest.
