Archbishop Rodrigues Urges Gratitude and Solidarity with Farmers at Agera Feast

Mumbai, October 3, 2026: Archbishop John Rodrigues of Bombay has called on the faithful to celebrate the traditional Agera harvest feast with gratitude for farmers, solidarity with those facing agricultural hardship, and a renewed commitment to care for creation. Agera is traditionally observed as a harvest thanksgiving in parts of Mumbai and neighbouring areas, while it is known as Kapni in other parts of the Archdiocese of Bombay. During the celebration, Archbishop Rodrigues expressed gratitude to God for the harvest and recognised the hard work, patience and perseverance of farmers. “We thank the Lord for the efforts of the farmers, the hard labour that they have put in,” the Archbishop said, highlighting the importance of appreciating those who cultivate the land. He noted that the harvest is not only a time to rejoice in agricultural produce but also an opportunity to recognise the sacrifices made by farmers. The abundance of the harvest, he said, points to God's generosity and providence. Prayers and Support for Farmers The Archbishop also remembered farmers in other parts of Maharashtra who are experiencing drought and difficult agricultural conditions. He offered prayers for them and appealed to different sections of society to extend support and assistance. The message encouraged the faithful to remember farmers not only during times of abundance but also when their livelihoods are threatened by drought and other challenges. Technology for Agriculture Archbishop Rodrigues also highlighted the potential of technology to strengthen agriculture in India. He expressed hope that technological advances would increasingly benefit farmers and contribute to the welfare of communities whose livelihoods depend on agriculture. He stressed that innovation should help strengthen the agricultural sector and improve the lives of those working on the land. A Call to Care for Creation The Archbishop connected the harvest celebration with the Christian responsibility to care for creation. He encouraged the faithful to see the natural world as a gift entrusted to humanity and to protect it for future generations. Invoking St Francis of Assisi, known for his association with love and care for creation, Archbishop Rodrigues sought his intercession as the faithful celebrated the harvest. The Agera celebration therefore brought together thanksgiving to God, appreciation for farmers, concern for those facing agricultural hardship, responsible use of technology and care for creation. Archbishop Rodrigues concluded by extending his greetings and blessing to all those celebrating Agera.
