What Was Discussed at Karnataka’s Catholic Think Tank Meeting in Bengaluru?

The Karnataka Regional Catholic Think Tank (KRCTT) held its Annual General Meeting on September 23 at Subhodhana, Regional Pastoral Centre (KROSS), Bengaluru, bringing together Church leaders and diocesan representatives from across Karnataka. All 13 diocesan bishops and two auxiliary bishops participated in the meeting, along with delegates representing the state’s 13 dioceses. The gathering focused on reflection, dialogue, cooperation and coordinated responses to issues concerning the Catholic community and wider society. Archbishop Peter Machado of Bengaluru, who serves as mentor of the KRCTT, delivered the keynote address. He highlighted the importance of collective reflection, responsible engagement and collaboration in responding to challenges facing the Church and society. Representatives from the dioceses presented reports covering developments, experiences, concerns and priorities in their respective regions. These reports provided an overview of areas where greater coordination and follow-up may be needed. KRCTT President Roy Castelino spoke about the vision and objectives of Catholic Think Tanks at the diocesan level. He noted that several dioceses had already established such groups, while others were working to identify representatives and complete the network. Castelino also emphasised systematic documentation, preparedness, effective communication and coordinated responses to emerging situations. He encouraged stronger networking and collaboration among diocesan Think Tanks. Lucas Antony Kedari, chairman of the Minority Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, addressed the gathering on networking, entrepreneurship, economic empowerment and enterprise development within the community. Dr. M. C. Rajan, National Secretary for Justice, Peace and Development of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India, highlighted the importance of establishing Legal Cells in all dioceses. He said these cells could help provide timely legal assistance and appropriate intervention when support is required, particularly during challenging situations. The bishops also discussed concerns affecting minority communities in their respective dioceses. The discussions included sharing experiences from the ground and identifying areas requiring greater attention, coordination and action. The concluding session focused on strengthening dialogue, networking, documentation and collaboration among the dioceses. Participants also observed a minute of silence in memory of Thomas Chandy, a former member of the KRCTT Governing Body, and others associated with the regional think tank who had passed away. The meeting concluded with the National Anthem, followed by a networking and fellowship lunch. The AGM provided a regional platform for Karnataka’s Catholic leadership and diocesan representatives to share experiences, discuss common concerns and explore ways to strengthen cooperation and coordinated engagement across the dioceses.
