How Are Bettiah Women Being Equipped to Build Safer Communities?
Women from 5 Bettiah parishes received training on gender justice, violence prevention, workplace safety and child protection, raising awareness, responsibility and participation in Church life today.
Women from five parishes of the Diocese of Bettiah participated in a formation programme focused on gender justice, prevention of violence against women and child protection on September 20, 2026. The programme aimed to strengthen awareness of dignity, safety and accountability in Church and community life. Organised by the Diocesan Women’s Commission, the programme was part of the implementation of Goal 2 of the CCBI Pastoral Plan 2033. It sought to deepen women’s understanding of their rights and responsibilities and encourage their active participation in the life and mission of the Church. Bishop Peter Sebastian Goveas of Bettiah, who chairs the Diocesan Women’s Commission, highlighted the dignity of every woman and child. He called for a culture based on respect, equality, protection and responsibility in both the Church and wider society. Mrs Sudha Clements, diocesan secretary of the Women’s Commission, welcomed the bishop and Mrs Bella Das, regional secretary of the Women’s Commission in Bihar. The programme began with prayer and a welcome song presented by parish members. The training covered several important areas, including gender sensitisation, violence against women, the Prevention of Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (POSH) Act, 2013, and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012. Mrs Bella Das conducted the sessions through group discussions, activities and practical exercises. Participants examined challenges affecting women and children in families, communities and Church settings. Particular attention was given to recognising different forms of violence, creating safe environments and identifying appropriate support mechanisms for those who may need assistance. The programme concluded with participants reaffirming their commitment to promoting awareness, protection and peace in their respective parishes. They were also encouraged to contribute to social transformation and help create safer and more inclusive communities. The initiative reflects the Diocese of Bettiah’s efforts to strengthen awareness of women's dignity and child protection while encouraging greater responsibility and participation at the parish and community levels.
